Hello from San Antonio, Texas! I’m here visiting my husband’s family. San Antonio is just a three hour drive from the Mexican border, so the city has a strong Mexican cultural influence. Since it’s the end of the year, there are a ton of people from Monterrey spending the holidays here—we see Monterrey license plates everywhere we go!
All of that reminded me of my trip to Monterrey in August of 2018. It was a city I absolutely loved getting to know! In case you’d like some Monterrey inspiration, there’s a 48 hour Monterrey itinerary here on the blog.
When I visited Monterrey, I stayed at the Habita MTY. If you’re planning on visiting this incredible city, it’s a fantastic choice!
Hotel Overview
Habita MTY is part of Design Hotels, a group of small boutique hotels in over 50 countries. I’ve stayed in hotels from the group in Mexico, Bolivia, and South Korea, and I enjoy the modern but local aesthetic! Several of their hotels are available through SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest, which recently merged with Marriott), and that’s how I first heard about the group.
Habita is a boutique hotel with just 39 rooms, all with incredible views of the city and the surrounding mountains. It’s very well located, and the minimalistic black & white design commands all details of the space, allowing the views to really stand out.
Location
The hotel is technically outside of Monterrey, in the municipality of San Pedro Garza Garcia—one of the wealthiest in Latin America. Surrounded by stores and restaurants, the hotel is a perfect option for travelers who like to explore on foot. The surrounding bars are open late, so if you’re looking for a quiet retreat you will not enjoy this very lively area.
If shopping is one of your travel priorities, this is the hotel for you! Habita MTY is close to several shopping malls, including the famous Palacio de Hierro. While I was in Monterrey, I was invited to a pool party at a country house outside the city, but I hadn’t taken any swimwear (since I went for work). I hopped in the nearest H&M at the Fashion Drive mall (a 10 minute Uber drive—and found a gorgeous one-piece suit in a flash.
Habita MTY is also close to the Chipinque Ecological Park, whose trails include beautiful mountains, coatis, and breathtaking views of the city!
Amenities
The hotel offers several amenities to its guests, even some delightful unusual ones. Breakfast here is excellent—full of fresh fruits, freshly pressed juices, breads, cheeses, and cold-cuts. The staff is very attentive and polite. I love that the restaurant area also has a terrace for guests who want to enjoy the fresh air.
One of my favorite details is that each floor of the hotel has a table immediately outside the elevators with a Nespresso machine that can be used at any time. It came in handy when I had to wake up at 3:30 in the morning to catch my flight to Guatemala!
The pool area is, without a doubt, the hotel’s best amenity. Located on the top floor of the hotel, there is a pool on each side of the bar with fantastic views of the mountains in Monterrey. On my spare time, I spent a lot of hours there! The pools are beautiful by day and by night, so it’s worth spending the late afternoon there and catching the lovely sunset.
The room
When I arrived at the Habita MTY, I was welcomed with a room upgrade—woo woo! From the Corner Room I had originally booked, I was upgraded to the Junior Suite. The suite has an additional 100 square feet of space, which includes a comfy couch and bar area, and a stunning mountain view (as opposed to the original room’s city view). The Corner Room has a queen bed while the suite has a king size. Speaking of beds, the bed at Habita MTY is a dream! I found it to have the perfect combination between soft and supporting, with incredibly comfortable pillows.
The bathroom is one of my favorite parts. The marble sink is stylish and spacious, as are the shower and bathtub (which are separate spaces). I also love hotels in which the toilet is in a completely separate area, and that’s the case at Habita. The group’s Distrito Federal Hotel in Mexico City has a very similar layout and general design.
The room’s layout provides a lot of privacy, since anyone at the door will not be able to see into the restroom or the bed, only the couch área: aka the most “public” and social part of the room. I also really enjoyed the table and built in bookcase on the other side of the room. I spent hours working from that table!
If there’s one thing that always scores huge points for me, it’s big windows. That was one of the reasons I chose to stay at the Habita MTY: it truly focuses on the view! The floor to ceiling while curtains are fantastic at blocking out the light if one wants that. They complement the minimalist black & white design of the room, which again allows the view to shine.
Another cool factor about the Habita MTY is that the rooms are very high tech. The internet speed is great, and each room has a bluetooth and speaker system that allows you to listen to music in any part of the room.
My only negative feedback is that as high tech as it is, the instructions on how to use said tech are not always clear (and sometimes nonexistent), making me spend a good amount of time trying to figure it out before asking for help. As a designer, I think minimalism is only worth it if it’s intuitive. The hotel could definitely provide clearer instructions for its guests. Once all that was sorted out, though, everything was easy to use and made for an enjoyable experience.
Conclusion
The Habita MTY Hotel in Monterrey, Mexico, is an excellent option for lovers of minimalistic design who want to be well located in Monterrey and truly enjoy the mountain views. I highly recommend this hotel, and would definitely stay there again if I go back to Monterrey!
